Please Help New Talavan

From Yogindra Vandana das Adhikari

Posted Sep 15, 2005

All glories to
Srila Prabhupada!

Hare Krsna! Please accept my sincere respects and good wishes.

The tragic killer hurricane that devastated the Mississippi and Louisiana coastlines also left its mark on New Talavan and the cow protection program.

Although the cowherd survived the storm, the future is questionable. Downed fences are the biggest problem. Because so many trees were blown over, naturally many fell on fences and houses. Consequently, our fence system suffered much damage.

Everyone is safe, and the Deities are being worshiped in Kalachandji Dham, Dallas.

Just See Krsna's Hand
and Careful Planning

From Dasanudas Vanacari

Posted Sep 5, 2005

Dear Devotees,

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, everyone has experienced the awesome reality of just how fragile our material existence is. Twelve hours of wind, some rain, a few tornadoes—and a major city is crippled, a community shattered, and opulent lifestyles destroyed for many, perhaps millions of people. Srila Prabhupada writes:

"In the grim clutches of maya, the first-class prisoners of this material world wrongly think themselves happy because they are rich, powerful, resourceful and so on...."

We just have a lot of pressing concerns right now to manage our community. Tomorrow Ramakeli Prabhu is going to Jackson to arrange for supplies for the devotees. We are getting some help from Food For Life also. So by Krsna's grace everything is working out.

Katrina: No Functioning
Society around Us

From Yogindra Vandana das Adhikari

Posted Sept 1, 2005

Dear Maharajas, GBCs, Temple Presidents, Web & Magazine Editors, and Other Devotees,

Hare Krsna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

The power of the Lord's external energy is inconceivable. How one storm can destroy the social structure of an area ranging from 50 miles west of New Orleans all the way to Mobile, Alabama is stunning. In Mississippi, everything from Jackson on south is devastated. There are no commerce, transportation, or other normal activities going on.

Despite our good fortune to have our temples in both New Orleans and New Talavan emerge relatively unscathed, the harsh reality is that there is no functioning society around us. The devotees in New Orleans are virtually trapped.

The devotees are fine in New Orleans. I just spoke to them last night after the hurricane was over, and the temple building was untouched, as was the residential building next to the temple. Today there is some flooding, but the devotees are continuing their service and have plenty of prasad. The Deities are accepting Their regular offerings and aratis.

Internet Preaching
Attracts 10,000

by Amarendar Nagavarapu
Posted April 19, 2004

Sankarshan Das Adhikari has broken new ground in the field of spreading Krishna consciousness. In January of 2003 he started an e-course called "The Ultimate Self-Realization Course" for teaching the science of Krishna bhakti via the Internet. He had previously put up a web page in an attempt to sell Bhagavad-gita but had gotten no result. He then reasoned that if he could first win people's trust by giving them something of value for free, he could then interest them in studying Srila Prabhupada's books.

Posted April 1, 2004

Recently, I had a wonderful experience, the kind that book distributors talk about all the time. It had never happened to me, and I had always wondered how these devotees preach so that people feel inspired to take so many books.

It was a nice, sunny, and beautiful springlike day. People were busy in their own fun plans. Some people were with their groups getting ready to enter restaurant for lunch, and others were waiting outside for their mates to arrive. Some were enjoying the sunny lounges of bars and restaurants. The whole area was filled with the smell of roasted meat, garlic, etc.

New Year's Eve in Denver
From Jayasacisuta Dasa
Posted January 6, 2004

Every year the city of Denver hosts a New Year’s Eve Celebration. Over 100,000 people turn out to see the fireworks and participate in the festivities. To make the event worthwhile, devotees from the Denver ISKCON temple lead a Harinama procession through the crowds. For much of the evening there isn’t much in the way of entertainment, so most of the crowd welcomes our chanting party. This year three or four people remained with us the entire three hours. Here are some pictures of this year’s Harinama.

Utah
The Projector Fest
From Caru Dasa
Posted December 8, 2003

We subtitled the Gita Fest this year The Projector Fest. The new BenQ projector remained on from 6 pm until 9 pm in one capacity or another. From 6 pm until 6:30, as people were arriving, we showed Vrndavan, Land of Krishna on the 9-foot by 12-foot screen. The image filled up the whole screen in sharp, vivid color.

Next, I introduced and explained the concept of Gita Yajna, a sacrifice wherein 108 offerings would be placed on the fire for each of the 108 key verses in the Bhagavad Gita. I asked Sri Sharma, Yogi Shah, and Dinesh and Kalpana Patel to be the yajnamanas. Our process was for me to chant each of the verses from memory and say "Svaha" while the yajnamanas put the samagri (a special blend of herbs) onto the fire. Simultaneously, each verse would appear in English on the big screen. Rajeev would use the remote control to move from one verse to the next, and then he would say the English.

Senior Citizens Visit Utah Temple
By Caru Dasa
Posted November 26, 2003

The West Jordan Senior Citizens Center, having heard good reports from other seniors' groups who have visited our temple, came with 57 people on a bus for tour and lunch. They arrived at 10:45 am. We had cooked all morning long. I made fancy rice with peanuts, raisins, and mixed vegetables, some spicy spaghetti with olives and chunks of TVP® (texturized vegetable protein), and matar paneer, the very popular Indian dish with peas and curd. For the first time I tried soaking the fried curd in warm whey, turmeric, and salt, before putting it with the peas. This soaking gave it a juicy, soft consistency.

Adventures in the Classroom
By Caru Dasa
Posted November 10, 2003

The three classes at Mountain View High School today (Thursday October 30) are not at all for adult education, as I had thought. The last time I did classes with Rod Jackman out of the UVSC (Utah Valley State College) media center, it was for adults and being video fed out to other high schools for evening classes.

This is much bigger. The three classes I teach today are regular daytime classes with 30 to 40 students from Mountain View High in each class. Simultaneously, each class is video fed out to another six high schools. That makes approximately 250 students per class and three classes means more than 750 students see the classes.

Mahabharata in Los Angeles
From Bhakta Wallace
Posted November 9, 2003

The Vedic Theatre formed in 2001 has finally acquired an intimate 50-seat theater just three blocks from the ISKCON temple in Los Angeles for the months of January and February. This gives us an opportunity to do 12 to 16 performances of a unique adaptation entitled Mahabharata: The Final Battle.

More important, it is a great springboard for preaching, and to our knowledge it is the first time that a so-called temple play, written by two devotees in 1987, is being done outside the temple area for the public at large.

Close to 1000 devotees made the pilgrimage to Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir to celebrate the transcendental appearance day of Lord Sri Krishna. It was a fun-filled, exciting festival that began at 4:30 am with a special mangala-arati darshan and kirtan.

At 7:30 am, Sri Sri Radha Govinda were offered a brand new set of clothes, which was sponsored by congregation devotee Rajesh Gulab and his family. The outfit was fall-themed and featured clusters of red-sequin leaves with gold trim.

Ecstasy on the
Lower East Side

by Vyenkata Bhatta Dasa
Posted August 18, 2003

"To choose to attend to the Lower East Side," wrote Allen Ginsberg about Srila Prabhupada, "what kindness and humility and intelligence!" Anyone present at the Angel Orensanz Art Center on the Friday before Ratha Yatra can attest to the fact that Srila Prabhupada's vision is still alive and thriving on the Lower East Side almost forty years later.

The Angel Orensanz Art Center is in a neo-gothic former synagogue, a five-minute walk from 26 Second Avenue. The center was the venue where devotees from the Second Avenue community hosted the International Sankirtan Festival.

Journal of a Prabhupada Man,
Entry #4

By Sankarshan Das Adhikari
Posted August 2, 2003

July 27, 2003—Austin, Texas USA

What jumped out of the cassette player and astounded me was Srila Prabhupada's statement "Take the management." He's speaking here of the entire material society, that it is being mismanaged by rogues and thieves and therefore plunged into a suffering condition. Srila Prabhupada is instructing us to take the management, to become the guiding authorities for the entire world population.

What a broad vision Srila Prabhupada has for this Krishna consciousness movement! What a broad vision we must also have as his followers! We are meant to manage the entire human society by the enlightened guidance so systemically, carefully, and lovingly presented in Srila Prabhupada's books.

Many of our devotees and members have lost their faith in ISKCON as being an institution that can lead the world out of chaos.

Journal of a Prabhupada Man, Entry #3
By Sankarshan Das Adhikari
Posted July 21, 2003

Friday, July 05, 2003, Austin, Texas–

Another day to try to do something to push forward the Krishna Consciousness Movement. What can we do? We are so disqualified. All we can do is place ourselves as instruments in the hands of Guru and Gauranga so if They like They may act through us to do something wonderful. In spite of our ineptness we have been given the sacred mission— revolutionize the planet, flood it with a tidal wave of Krishna consciousness. So we must arise and fight the battle to awaken the sleeping souls from the slumber of maya. We must faithfully serve Srila Prabhupada’s order to preach Krishna consciousness and then depend on the Krishna for the results.

Journal of a Prabhupada Man, Entry #2
By Sankarshan Das Adhikari
Posted July 1, 2003

The sweet nectar of preaching Krishna consciousness is the causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada upon us. This material world is a place of misery, but for one who is absorbed in preaching Krishna consciousness, it becomes transformed into a playground, a place of transcendental delight.

Out of his causeless mercy Srila Prabhupada has blessed all of us with unlimited preaching opportunities so we can be fully happy, absolutely enlivened even while getting old and dying within this rotten material world. I’ve taken my share of his mercy by opening an ISKCON preaching center along with my wife in Austin, Texas. Srila Prabhupada directly ordered me in my initiation letter in 1971, "Make our Austin center a grand success." Our steady preaching here for many years has yielded a wonderful group of sincere souls seeking escape from the cycle of birth and death.
