Brazil: A Preaching Revolution
By Lilananda Dasa, Lalita Priya Devi Dasi, and Bhakta Ivan Salles
Posted October 27, 2004

"Brazil?" you ask. "Where is Brazil on the map, anyway?" Well, you will be hearing more from us from now on. There is a preaching revolution going on in Brazil, perhaps the greatest, most significant ISKCON has seen since the 60s and 70s.

Nando Reis, a famous Brazilian singer inspired by George Harrison, has taken Krishna consciousness and the chanting of Hare Krishna to a level never heard before.

Translated from Portuguese by Lalita Priya Devi Dasi
[Sorry for the late posting, but we have just received this.]

An estimated audience of 30 million now listens to the mantra every day.

Porto Alegre, Brazil, June 22, 2004–

It is 1:30 am on the first night of winter. We are in the south of the country, in Porto Alegre, but in all directions, the night is boiling with activity. The three thousand tickets to participate of the first live DVD recording of the singer and composer Nando Reis had already been sold out some days ago. The Opinion Theater is crowded and the show is already in full swing.

Brazil: Rock Star
Welcomes Devotees

By Giridhari Das

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

We had a nice program here in Brasília, Brazil, and I thought I'd tell you about it. The largest rock festival in the history of Brasília is taking place this weekend, and one of the main bands is The Pretenders. Last Wednesday I got a call from the event organizers telling me that the leader of the band, Ms Chrissie Hynde, wanted to get together with the Hare Krishnas to do a pro-vegetarian media-op. It was held today.

Temple Inauguration &
Janmastami in Lome, Togo

By Varaha das
Posted September 25, 2003

Dear Prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to HH Bhakti Tirtha Swami Gurudeva.

We had a four-day festival including the temple inauguration, the celebration of Janmastam, and conferences on yoga, other paths of liberation, African culture, and avataras. The Lome temple in Togo is barely eight months old, with only three resident devotees. The temple inauguration attracted over 250 guests and members. The two-day conference registered between 70 to 80 participants each day, and the Big Day, Sri Krishna Janmastami, had a record crowd of about 500 guests.

New Temple in Togo
By Varaha Dasa
Posted June 23, 2003

Pranams. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Krishna Consciousness is spreading to every town and village in West Africa. We have just opened a new center in Lome, Togo. This is a Francophone country. The temple here is barely four months old, but there are people here who have been in contact with Krishna Consciousness for more than fifteen years. Quite a number of them have almost all the collection of Krishna conscious books.

But most surprising is the level of devotional practice of some of these Togolese people, who have never seen an ISKCON temple before but have been able to establish their home altars and are practicing their daily sadhana.

Rathayatra in South Africa
By Jayapataka Swami
(a letter to Kavicandra Swami)

Posted April 27, 2003

I was able to visit the 15th Annual Durban Rathayatra Festival. The Festival is really impressive. It is now held over the Easter weekend from Friday to Monday (four days). They have beautiful gates inviting people to enter, and there are posters all over the city. Literally tens of thousands of people come every day.

The first day they distributed about 25,000 plates of free prasadam. The second day they distributed 35,000 plates. Every day it increased. Over the four days over 120,000 plates of free prasadam were given out. It is nice prasadam: birani rice, dal, and halavah.
