I arrived back in Warsaw on May 8, after an absence of nearly six months. My travels had taken me to the far corners of the earth, to such places as Australia, India, the United States, and South Africa. People in those prominent countries often consider Poland, tucked away in Eastern Europe and off the beaten track, as a place of less importance.

Sri Sri Krishna Balarama
Mandir: 30th Anniversary

By Deena Bandhu dasa

Day One – April 17

Rama Navami, April 18, marked the 30th anniversary of the first and only complete temple ever built by Srila Prabhupada, Sri Sri Krishna Balarama Mandir. Up to that time we had remodeled churches, a temporary temple in Mayapur, one in the making in Bombay, or houses in the low-rent area painted bright colors with a sign "Radha Krishna Temple" hung out front.

The temple is located right on the main road named by the Municipality as Bhaktivedanta Swami Marg in honor of Srila Prabhupada's making Vrindavan famous all over the world.

"Tales of Wonder"

As our two-month tour of the American temples was coming to a close, I found myself drawing on my body's reserve energies. Our schedule of two or three programs a day meant I rarely went to bed before midnight. Constantly on the move, traveling back and forth through different time zones, eating irregularly, and sleeping in a different home every other day had become a taxing routine and had taken its toll on me.

In Alachua, Florida, I fainted one morning as I left the temple. A devotee helped me outside and sat me on the lawn. "Maharaja," he said, "you'd better slow down. Take it easy."

The Ideal Is the Real

The contention of HH Hridayananda Goswami Maharaja is that homosexual devotees be allowed to stay together with a partner of their choice, as a heterosexual couple would stay together in the grhasta asrama. His statement in a letter to Chakra and Dipika is this: "I am not convinced that marriage is the best means in all cases, but some serious, formal and public recognition and appreciation of gay monogamy is, in my view, in the best interest of ISKCON and its members."

Dear Maharajas, Prabhus and Disciples

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

This is the final letter that I will be sending out. Our movement is like a young adult. There are many things that everyone experiences, individuals as well as institutions, that are part of the maturation process. As we grow, we also have to deal with growth pains. Often after these growth pains we experience the greatest benefits from our struggles, just like a mother who is pregnant and who is bringing forth children. Each time before she gives birth she has to deal with almost unbearable challenges.

I very much appreciate His Holiness Hrdayananda Maharaja's comments about gay monogamy. I would like to comment from my own experience.

I had the good fortune to be initiated by Srila Prabhupada in 1977. I practiced Krsna Consciousness for over 15 years. I married in the movement, had two children, and finally left my abusive husband. I went to college so I could support my children with no help from their father.

It was there I realized in stages that I was not solely heterosexual.
