Planning: Asramas for Older Vaisnavis
From JayaLalita Devi Dasi
Posted April 30, 2004

Hare Krsna Prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Some of you know me. Most of you do not. I tend to be a very quiet and very opinionated person. I have one of those opinions now that I want to put forth and try to stir up general concern for this topic.

One of my main concerns for our future as devotees is not the future of ISKCON but the well-being of aging and retiring devotees. It is obvious that we have not been able to establish a real social setting. Over the last 30 years, we have failed to develop a system that will shelter devotees through the entire cycle of birth, aging, disease, and death. HH Giriraj Swami along with Sangita Devi Dasi and others are in the process of building the Vaisnavas Care network to see devotees through a hospice-like stage before they leave this world.

Voidness Arises from Frustration
From Jayadvaita Swami

Bhagavad-gita As It Is 4.10

"Being freed from attachment, fear and anger, being fully absorbed in Me and taking refuge in Me, many, many persons in the past became purified by knowledge of Me— and thus they all attained transcendental love for Me."

Purport

First Edition:
One has to get rid of all three stages of attachment to the material world: negligence of spiritual life, fear of a spiritual personal identity, and the conception of void that underlies the frustration of life.

Second Edition:
. . . and the conception of void that arises from frustration in life.

The ISKCON Prison Ministry
From Shyama Priya devi dasi
Posted April 28, 2004

The ISKCON Prison Ministry has been giving Krsna consciousness to the inmates of prisons all over the world for over 16 years. Candrasekhara dasa heads this ministry, which started as a way for him to preach as a householder. Responding to hundreds of letters and inquiries every year, he has kept the ministry going all these years, through many difficulties and with very little help.

Many people are looking for Krsna while incarcerated. The ISKCON Prison Ministry is helping them find Him by sending books, tapes, Back To Godhead magazines, videos, japa beads, and neck beads. Some inmates, guided by the ministry, have been able to take shelter of a guru. Many prisoners never had the association of devotees before meeting them through the ministry. Some have never visited a temple but are looking forward to it after they are released.

History Made at
Kumbha Mela

From Deena Bandhu Dasa
Posted April 27, 2004

On 20th April, history was made at the Ujjain Kumbha Mela when the All India Sadhu Samaj officially accepted Lokanatha Swami as a mahant representing ISKCON. This happened only after a long battle over several days, where Sarvabhauma had to answer many, many objections and prove ISKCON is a bonafide Vaisnava sampradaya. It was a glorious fight, but on the day of the Sahi Snana, or Royal Bath, ISKCON had its own place in the procession, and the devotees were dancing like firebrands in what became a victory march to the Rama Ghat.

Staying Alive
Please Do Not Do This
From Manjari devi dasi
Posted April 26, 2004

Dawn Gibbs arrived at Delhi International Airport and got a pre-paid taxi to take her to the Brahmakumari ashrama there. She never made it. The taxi driver murdered her in an attempt to rob her. He then paid someone Rs.10 to clean the car of the blood, returned to the pre-paid taxi stand, and then returned home to sleep, where the police caught him.

India, despite the superficial coverings of what is considered civilization, remains a very dangerous and cruel place as Dawn Gibbs found out. The dangers for a Westerner traveling alone in India cannot be underestimated, especially for women.

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

In January this year, a most wonderful three-day celebration took place in our ISKCON society. It was the grand opening of the Sri Sri Radha Giridhari Temple in Auckland, New Zealand.

This project, started in 1987 with the ground-breaking ceremony attended by New Zealand's Prime Minister David Lange, has been a labor of love for the Auckland community. Countless hours of hard work by a small army of devotees over a period of 17 years has culminated in this beautiful temple and community center.

Internet Preaching Attracts 10,000

Sankarshan Das Adhikari has broken new ground in the field of spreading Krishna consciousness. In January of 2003 he started an e-course called "The Ultimate Self-Realization Course" for teaching the science of Krishna bhakti via the Internet. He had previously put up a web page in an attempt to sell Bhagavad-gita but had gotten no result. He then reasoned that if he could first win people's trust by giving them something of value for free, he could then interest them in studying Srila Prabhupada's books.

Remembering Goswami Maharaja On His Disappearance Day Festival

Dear Tamal Krsna Maharaja,

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to our beloved master, Srila Prabhupada.

Goswami Maharaja, this is the first time I have visited your samadhi mandir in Mayapura. I have often walked past the samadhi since I have been here, but I could not bring myself to come in. Please excuse me, but in my heart of hearts I have still not reconciled myself with your leaving. It is too painful.

"What is the most painful thing in the life of a devotee?" Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked Ramananda Raya.

"But for separation from a Vaisnava, I can think of no unbearable pain," the governor replied.

Gopal and the Schoolboy
As told by Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja
Posted April 15, 2004

The following article appeared in issue number 68 of Sri Krishna Kathamrita Bindu, the free fortnightly email magazine from ISKCON Gopal Jiu Publications.

A mother had a small six- or seven-year-old son. She wanted to admit him into primary school so he could get some education, but the school was a little far away, half a mile from their house. Still she told the boy that he should go to school every morning.

So, the boy started going. On the path to school he had to pass through a jungle where there were some ferocious animals like tigers and snakes. Being a small child, he was afraid. He came to his mother and said, "Oh mother, when I was going through that jungle on the way to school I was very afraid. So many ferocious animals are there. I can't go any more."

Please Pray for Jacob
From Joshua Hawley
Posted April 16, 2004

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glory to Sri Guru and Gauranga!

I write today with a humble request: that any one of you Vaisnavas that may read this letter— I would humbly ask that you pray to Krishna on behalf of the newly departed soul of my younger and only brother, Jacob Frederick Hawley. He met with an untimely death at the age of 23. Born October 31, 1980, died April 14, 2004.

I loved my brother very much, and unfortunately he never got the opportunity to associate with devotees. So I just ask that he may be remembered by the devotees so that Krishna may bless his soul to take birth as a Vaisnava.

Thank you very much. Begging your mercy eternally as servant of the servant of the servant, and begging to remain yours,

Sincerely,
Joshua Hawley

Concerned about the integrity and fidelity of this translation? Is "self-realized souls"— in the plural— a deviation?

January 30 - February 10, 2004

"Narottam! Narottam! Narottam!"

"Why do you want to visit my country?" the Bangladesh Ambassador asked suspiciously. "We're the poorest people on earth."

"I know, Sir," I replied as I adjusted my Yankees baseball cap, "but in a BBC survey several years ago it was determined that the people of Bangladesh are the happiest on earth. I am curious to find out why the poorest are the happiest. My country, America, is the world's richest, but came in a disappointing seventh place in the survey in terms of contentedness. Obviously, happiness is not synonymous with material prosperity."

"I'm intrigued by your reasoning," the ambassador said. "I'm a Muslim, and the Koran teaches the same principle. I'll make an exception and grant you a visa. As an American, you'd normally have to obtain it at our embassy in America, not here in a foreign country.

Sridhara Swami
By Mahakratu Das

Posted April 2, 2004

I remember first meeting Sridhara Swami in the mid-seventies in Mumbai, India. We were working together under Gargamuni, enrolling life members. In those days we were a bit tough. We had to be because of the circumstances of living on a construction site (the temple) and having very little money or resources but faithfully going out every day to visit Mumbai businessmen and persuade them to give us some rupees and become members of the then fledgling ISKCON.

When I first started working with Sridhara Swami, he was quite used to the hot climate and the culture, whereas I wasn't, so sometimes, after a long morning program, when we would head out in our car for an appointment, I would be overcome by sleepiness. Then I would feel a sudden bump or nip on the back. It was Sridhara Swami waking me up. He would have a big smile and pretend nothing had happened.

We are pleased to inform you that by the mercy of the Vaishnavas, the inauguration of ISKCON of Central New Jersey on Sunday, 28th March 2004, was a big success.

The Sunday feast program was held at a rented hall, and nearly 250 devotees attended. The maximum capacity  of the rented hall was 150 people, so some inconvenience was faced, but the program went very well. HH Romapada Swami gave a nice presentation on Sri Pancha Tattva's installation and Their boundless mercy flowing throughout ISKCON. The start of the preaching effort is also Their causeless mercy.

We sold out! Yes, we’ve completely exhausted the first replication of 1000 sets of the Srila Prabhupada DVD Library. Demand has been outstripping supply. We are ecstatic— except that we are out of sets....

This is your final notice of opportunity. ITV will be making another replication of the Srila Prabhupada DVD Library in about 120 days. That means that you have the possibility of submitting translations within the next 90 days to have them included in the new edition. We estimate that there won’t be another replication for at least two years or more.
