Call for Cow Protection
From Gopal dasa Posted January 31, 2004 Fulfillment: A Call for Cow Protection and the Establishment of Brahminical Culture A funny thing occurred recently when the "Last Call for Global Excellence Award 2004 Nominations" notice appeared in the Cow Conference. We all discovered that there was no mention of cow protection as one of the categories. Before I go on, I would like to point out that it was eventually found to be a simple oversight resulting from no one yet nominating anyone in that field. But it got us thinking: Why is there so little support for cow protection in ISKCON these days? There is talk of simple living and high thinking, there is plenty of talk of warm milk and prasad swimming in ghee, but there is little talk of fulfilling the final leg of Srila Prabhupada’s mission, and if there is, it is for the most part only talk.
Diary
of a Traveling Preacher December 18, 2003 – January 30, 2004 "Hankering for Home" I saw the same stewardess, and she greeted me again with a cheerful "Hari Bol!" "Hari Bol!" I answered. I looked at her badge and saw that she was the chief purser. After we were airborne she came by and sat on the armrest of the seat directly across the aisle from me. A few passengers raised their eyebrows, but she was not disturbed. "I can afford it," she said. "I've been with the company for twenty years. I'm retiring next month." "Congratulations," I said. Her face became more serious. "You know," she said, "I was married to a Hare Krsna devotee when I was young." Mayapur: Sri Advaita Acharya's Appearance Day Text & photos by Vrindavan Lila Devi Dasi Posted January 30, 2004 Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! We have just celebrated Sri Advaita Acharya's Appearance Day in Mayapur. To mark this very special day, the large Panchatattva Deities started Their journey to Mayapur. Advaita Acharya is calling the Lord to manifest, and He is coming in His five forms. And we are also calling with Advaita Acharya. Advaita Acharya ki jaya! Hare Krishna! Update on Pancha Tattva January 24– Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! This is Bhagavatamrta Das, and I am in Kumbakonam yatra right now. I writing to you to give the latest about the quintuplets: the Pancha Tattva Bharata and Pitambara are set to leave in a few hours from here for Madras, where they will fly back to Mayapur. Today is the 24th and by tomorrow the Deities will be completed or in very much a state of completion. The truck is coming on the 26th, and we will start loading Their Lordships on the truck. I'm also getting a Tata truck 407 flatbed so devotees can come with us throughout the trip. So far, without even asking anybody, we have around 20 devotees confirmed going with Pancha Tattva. Text & photos by Vrindavan Lila Devi Dasi Posted January 26, 2004 Dear Devotees, Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! We have just returned from a trip to Calcutta, where we visited Srila Prabhupada's birthplace in Tollygunge. In these photos you can see the present structure where the house of Srila Prabhupada's mother had been, where Srila Prabhupada was born. Some family descendants are still living there. The originally large property has been divided among them, and everyone has a little piece. There are a lot of dividing walls now, so it is difficult to take a picture of how it was at the time of Srila Prabhupada's birth.

Radhika Devi From Rama Raghava Dasa Posted January 24, 2004 Dear prabhus, Hare Krishna. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. I am very excited to tell you about a recently released CD by some family friends of ours. The title is Gopinatha, and it is by Seva Radhika Devi Dasi, who lives in Queens, New York. It is a short CD and therefore very inexpensive, featuring a beautifully unique rendition of Gopinath and a Hare Krishna Kirtan. Seva Radhika was born of initiated parents from Trinidad, named Shyama Devi Dasi and Krishna Smaranam Dasa, on August 24, 1984. She was recognized as having a good singing voice at a very young age.
Mayapura:
Giant This year at the Mayapura festival, book distributors will come together from all over the world to learn how to perfect the art of transcendental book distribution. These gatherings will be held March 2 - 5 and will be conducted by senior book distributors from several countries. Famous veteran book distributor, Manidhara Prabhu is even coming from Europe. And book distribution minister Vijay Prabhu will be there too. Make plans now to attend. Everyone is welcome.
Text and photos by Vrindavan Lila Devi Dasi Posted January 23, 2004 Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Many flowers are growing in Mayapur everywhere, creating a happy and celebrative mood at all times of year and especially starting from now through the spring. Here we are sending just a little glimpse of the large variety of Mayapur flowers and bushes. Devotees coming for the festival can bring seeds with them and plant some more flowers to beautify Mayapur even more with their offerings of love. Hare Krishna! Your servant, Prabhupada has written the following in one of his letters to a devotee: "The more you help develop Mayapur, the more Lord Chaitanya will bless your area of the world and it will flourish." By Bhakti Tirtha Swami Posted January 23, 2004 Dear Maharajas and Prabhus, Please accept my humble obeisances. The Harinaam Press has a special offer for Gaura Purnima! Spiritual Warrior 4, Conquering over the Enemies of the Mind, and Spiritual Warrior 5, Making the Mind Your Best Friend, will be off the press and ready for distribution in a couple of weeks. Those who order in advance, before Gaura Purnima, can receive the books for only $10.00 each. The books are in soft cover, a little less than 300 pages, and will normally sell for $14.95 each. Both books can be ordered from Murari Gupta at egmurari@aol.com or Stayi-bhava at bhava@meyedev.com. These books are especially good for leaders who are counseling devotees who are confronted with mental crises such as depression, phobias, attacks by the six enemies of the mind as well as those who have lost faith in the power of the process of bhakti. From Jayadvaita Swami Posted January 23, 2004 Did you know that the edition of the First Canto we read today differs dramatically from the first edition published in America? In the first two chapters, big differences in the translations. Now you can see those differences—

For those have questions about the editing of Srila Prabhupada's books, examining those First Canto revisions should be a very fruitful exercise. And here's a relevant story. Mayapur: Quotations from Srila Prabhupada Submitted by Bhakti Purusottama Swami Posted January 20, 2004 The Krsna consciousness movement has established its center in Mayapur, the birth site of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, to give men the great opportunity to go there and perform a constant festival of sankirtana-yajna. [Srimad Bhagavatam 5.19.24 purport] I want that we shall hold a grand festival in Mayapur from middle of February to first March. [Letter to Jayapataka (now Swami), Bombay 22nd December, 1971] In February we shall go with full party to Mayapur for holding festival for Lord Caitanya's Appearance Day. Sucirani: From Kavicandra Swami Posted January 20, 2004 We had a report of the auspicious passing of Mother Sucirani from this world. She was a very humble Vaishnavi. I did not spend much time with her, but I did have the good fortune to witness her exemplary life. She was a quite successful businessperson, and she used everything for the service of the Lord, sharing whatever she had with other devotees. The fact that HG Aindra came to her house to chant indicates Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu's special favor on her. [Article complete on this page] Mother
Sucirani: Posted January 20, 2004 Dear Banke Bihari and Ananda Tirtha Prabhus, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. You have done a wonderful service, facilitating Sucirani's departure in this way. I'm sure you will receive her continued eternal blessings, and those of her Lord, Sri Krishna. I am sorry for your loss, and wish you a soft, caring, and swift recovery process. Please do not ignore the pain, as it is valid and must be attended. The following verses were sent to me by HH Kesava Bharati Maharaja after the passing away of my dear spiritual master, HH Tamal Krishna Goswami. They helped me immensely, and I hope they will also help you. It is about the pain of separation. Text & photos by Vrindavan Lila Devi Dasi Posted January 19, 2004 Please accept my humble obeisances. ISKCON Juhu: Makar Sankranti and Jagannath Rath Yatra Posted January 19, 2004 The day 14th January 2004, marks the auspicious day when Srila Prabhupada installed Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari 26 years ago. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, ISKCON Juhu distributed about 45,000 plates of hot prasadam meals in different parts of Mumbai to underprivileged people. Also thousands of packets of peanut-and-sugar candy and til laddus were distributed to the citizens of Mumbai. Devotees and well-wishers at ISKCON Juhu (Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari Temple), Mumbai, organized the 24th annual Lord Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra Devi Rath Yatra festival on 16 January 2004. His Excellency Vishnukant Shastri Governor of Uttar Pradesh inaugurated the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra parade by sweeping the floor in front of the Rath. Lord
Narasimhadeva After the opening if ISKCON's Rukmini Dwarakadisa Temple in Dwaraka, the devotees traveled to the city of Rajkot for the installation of Lord Narasimhadeva. Although there were many life members in Rajkot, an ISKCON temple had not manifested. Then His Holiness Mahavishnu Goswami went there and was very well received. The government has given eight acres of land just outside of the city on the main highway and in less than a year the devotees constructed a temple and guesthouse and established the worship of Sri Sri Radha Nilamadhava. Of course plans are for a very large project and the local members are very enthusiastic. Srimati Vaidiki Devi Passes Away By Devala das (ISKCON Toronto) Posted January 17, 2004 It is with deep regret and sadness that I wish to inform all devotees about the departure of Srimati Vaidiki devi from Vrindavan around December 28, 2003. Vaidiki devi, 36, was staying in a guest ashram of Vrindavan when her body died, allegedly from a leaking gas heater in the night. Investigations are either continuing or must have concluded. She was cremated on the banks of the Yamuna ghat in Mathura around December 29 or 30. (I am not sure of the exact date.) A garland of Sri Sri Radha-Shyamasundar was placed around her body. "She was so gentle, non-judgmental, self-effacing, and yet so strong in her determination to serve the devotees and the holy name," writes Vishakapriya devi, a close friend of hers in Vrindavan. "I pray that her humble but powerful example may remain forever present in my consciousness."
Bhakta
Sanjaya Leaves Body One of Mayapur's sankirtan devotees left his body at 4:00 AM on 13th January 2004. Bhakta Sanjay was suffering from blood cancer. Three days ago he was feeling all right and had gone for book distribution in Kolkata, when all of a sudden he fell sick. He was admitted to the Sishu Mangal Hospital in Kolkata, where doctors found that he was suffering from blood cancer. During the days he spent in the hospital, Bhakta Sanjaya was calm and quiet. Blood cancer is a disease that often gives much pain, but Bhakta Sanjaya did not suffer very much. Sankirtan devotees were with him all the time. Even though hospitals here do not usually allow visitors outside visiting hours, in this case the hospital authorities allowed our devotees to be with him.
The Poison Issue My Letter on VNN By Ambarisa das Posted January 15, 2004 There has recently been published on VNN a letter that was supposedly written recently by me pertaining to the alleged poisoning of Srila Prabhupada. This letter was written several years ago in support, at that time, of an attempt of a group of devotees to get at the truth of this issue, following a less-than-conclusive investigation by Balavanta prabhu. Since that time, my thinking on this issue has changed, and I have distanced myself from any investigation and investigators. I am way too busy trying to carry out the orders that Srila Prabhupada personally gave to me to spend my energy with this, nor would I want to. It is hard for me to fathom why this letter would surface at this late date. From Dravida dasa Posted January 15, 2004 Dear Devotees, Please accept my humble obeisances. Pancha-tattva Dear Prabhu, Please accept my humble regards and the blessings of Srila Prabhupada for the well-being of you and your family. I pray that this new year will bring you increasing happiness in Krishna consciousness. I would like to give you the opportunity to be one of the first devotees to offer your appreciation to Srila Prabhupada on his 108th Anniversary year at Sridham Mayapur in a unique way that even Lord Nityananda and Bhaktivinode Thakur will appreciate. From Krishna-kripa das Posted January 12, 2004 As in previous years, I have made a couple of web pages of pictures with descriptions from Indradyumna Swami's festivals in Poland last summer, which you may be interested in. These festivals expose many tens of thousands of people each year to the songs, dances, drama, art, and philosophy of the spiritual culture of ancient India and thus help to awaken their dormant Krishna consciousness. U.S.A. Hare Krsna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! I am a devotee from Chicago who might be moving to Athens, Georgia, this spring to finish school. I was wondering if there are some devotees in that area who are doing regular programs. Atlanta is a little over an hour away and I might only be able to get there on the weekends and for festivals.

Tribute to Sucirani Mataji January 8, 2004– Dear devotees, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Today I have received the auspicious news about Sucirani Mataji's departure. There is a very nice verse that I remember: "I offer my respectful obeisances to the feet of that great personality who resolves to reside till death in Vrndavana, which is the kingdom of transcendental bliss because Sri Radha and Sri Krsna, who are the crest jewel among paramours, realize that such a person is one of Their most intimate servants and talk about her." Dear Devotees,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Sri Caitanya Bhagavata declares that when a devotee studies in Navadvipa Dhama, then vidya-rasa, the taste for learning, awakens within his heart. As ISKCON grows, always hopeful of achieving the footing of a genuinely brahminical culture, MIHE offers its contribution in the very place where Nimai Pandita exhibited vidya-rasa, as Sri Dvija-mani, the jewel of the twice-born. True education is based upon brahminical culture and vidya-rasa. Online semester registration ends January 21st. Atma
Program From Deena Bandhu dasa Posted January 10, 2004 Haridas Prabhu in Bombay produced a wonderful series of Hindi lectures on Bhagavad Gita from beginning to end. Featured on these lectures were Devakinandana Das, President of ISKCON Vrindavan and Vice President of ISKCON Juhu; Sarvabhauma das, Vice President of ISKCON Vrindavan; and Gauranga das, Vice President of ISKCON Chowpatty. The show was on the air for almost two years and was very much appreciated by the public. Almost everywhere we went, we heard people talking about the program. Please, if you would know of any Gaudiya Vaishnava temple, center, etc. that daily performs the yuga-dharma of Harinam Sankirtan, if you could take the time to refer us to such, I would be eternally in your debt. Lord Chaitanya had two purposes for coming: to experience first-hand the bliss of serving Krishna and to spread pure love for Krishna, which is very rare. Writing about Lord Chaitanya’s plan for making His mercy widely available, Srila Krishna das Kaviraja Gosvami says, "sri-krishna-chaitanya-daya karaha vichara, vichara karile chitte pabe chamatkara: If you are indeed interested in logic and argument, kindly apply it to the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Mataji Vrindavan, January 5, 2004– Dear Devotees, Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. This is just a short note to inform you that HG Sucirani Dasi, of Perth, Australia, left her body a few hours ago, on the evening of January 5. She had been diagnosed with cancer exactly one year ago, and although it was kept in check for the first six months or so, thereafter her condition deteriorated rapidly. Her passing away, however, was most auspicious. Following in the footsteps of Srila Prabhupada and so many of our Vaisnava acaryas, she was able to quit her material body in Krishna's own land of Vrindavan, with minimal pain and in the presence of devotees loudly chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.
From Jayasacisuta Dasa Posted January 6, 2004 Every year the city of Denver hosts a New Year’s Eve Celebration. Over 100,000 people turn out to see the fireworks and participate in the festivities. To make the event worthwhile, devotees from the Denver ISKCON temple lead a Harinama procession through the crowds. For much of the evening there isn’t much in the way of entertainment, so most of the crowd welcomes our chanting party. This year three or four people remained with us the entire three hours. Here are some pictures of this year’s Harinama.

Inaugurates By Bhakti Purusottama Swami Posted January 5, 2004 Mass Prasadam Distribution in Kolkata on New Year's Day — Inaugurated by West Bengal's Youth and Sports Minister, Mr. Subash Chakravarty A massive prasadam-distribution program was launched by ISKCON Kolkata on January 1, 2004, at Shealda Station, one of the busiest places in Kolkata. The Railway Department allowed us to use the whole parking lot in front of the station. Devotees of our Kolkata congregation had prepared a nice pandal, and many devotees gathered to cook and distribute Krsna's mercy to everyone. From Damana Krishna Dasa Posted January 3, 2004 Every year we have conducted our New Year celebration as a preaching program in Slovenia. This year, the devotees decided to have a slightly different program. In previous years, there were also different performances and competitions. This year we had the following program: At 18:30. there was a one-hour Gaura Arati lead by Mrigendra Prabhu and Narasimha arati by Sundari Devi Dasi. After this came a DVD film of Vrindavan Dham, filmed by Bhakta Zoran this year. Tapta Kancanadi Prabhu gave expert comments on the different holy places shown in the film. Mathuradhisha Prabhu, who has recently come back from a year and a half of preaching all around the world, was also present in the film. Govardhan
Hill From Urmila Devi Dasi Posted January 3, 2004 It wasn’t an assignment. It hadn’t been taught. Who teaches script writing to six-year-olds? But on weekends, Jahnu dasa was writing dramas, lots of dramas. He was taking stories and transforming them into plays. One day he decided to write a script detailing how Krishna lifted Govardhana Hill. His mother had written some plays, and when she saw his interest, she showed him some details of proper form. But mostly he worked on his own. About a month before the festival of Govardhana puja, he brought his script about the Govardhana pastime into his school, Padma Academy, and showed it to one of his teachers, Campakalata devi dasi. Certainly she was thrilled that such a young student had taken such initiative. And the work was good, too. From Vrindavan Lila Devi Dasi Posted January 3, 2004 Mayapur, January 1, evening– Hare Krishna! I am writing this account as the situation unfolds. Ganga is very cold these days, and Gulab is covered with cold mud from head to foot. Lots of people have gathered, most of them watching, and many are trying to help.

Year's Day in Mayapur Dear devotees, Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Many pilgrims come to Mayapur on weekends and on public holidays. More than 400,000 visitors came over Christmas, and about as many came over New Year. The visitors like to wander around and take darshan of the whole place. From Kavicandra Swami Posted January 2, 2004 In December 2003, ISKCON opened a beautiful Rukmini-Dwarakadish Mandir. Dwaraka is well known as the place where Lord Krsna stayed for many years until His departure. In Lord Krsna's time it was a huge, opulent city with 900,000 palaces. Now it is a small village, but Lord Dwarakadish is still the center of attention. His beautiful temple was first built by Visvakarma under the direction of the Lord's great grandson.
