The
Deities' Eyes: Dark Blue From Varnadi Dasa Posted October 6, 2003
Hare Krishna. This is in response to your question on Dipika, about the color of the Deity's eyes. Both Radha and Krishna have dark blue eyes. Texts 26 and 45 of Bilvamangala's Krishna Karnamrta state: "When will Krishna cast upon me His sidelong glances, which are as dark blue as the blue lotuses growing in the Yamuna and tremulous with waves of mercy? And when will my heart find ineffable joy in the playful notes of His flute, which are more cooling than the moon held on the head of Siva, Cupid's enemy?" "When will the time come when that merciful boy Krishna will look upon me with His playful lotus eyes, which are soothing and cooling with loving emotion, reddish at the corners and dark bluish at the irises, and wonderfully rolling and dancing? Sri Vrndavana-mahimamrita states about Her eyes being dark colored: "A vine of pearls splendidly decorates the waterpot-breasts of Sri Radha. It is Her touch that gives these pearls their beauty. O beautiful-faced girl, your crooked dark eyes are now plunged into the crooked dark form of Lord Hari. The friendship of similar things is natural in this world." (11.92-93) On Sri Radha, whose lips are beautiful even when not decorated with cosmetics, whose hands are like lotus flowers even when not anointed with kunkuma, whose glistening dark lotus eyes are very beautiful even when not anointed with mascara, whose long, smooth, glossy hair is very beautiful even when not combed or tied, and who, even without wearing any ornaments, is ornamented in the most beautiful way, please always meditate in this land of Vrndavana. When the fortunate devotees consider that Vrndavana is more dear to them than life itself, then Vrndavana is not difficult for them to attain. If, by the mercy of the great devotees in Vrndavana, they attain pure love, then the queen of Vrndavana will at once be easily attained by them. (13.5-6) And in his Radha Kripa Kataksa (sloka 7), Srila Rupa Goswami makes clear what dark color that is: "Her slender arms, creeper-slim, rhythmically wave and flow like lotus fibres in a current of water. Like the dancing top of the swaying vine, Her blue lotus eyes flash with enthralling glances. Her playful and alluring movements entice lovely meetings and fascinate Mohan Himself to take refuge in Her charms. O when will She shower upon me Her sidelong glance of overflowing grace?" Hoping this meets you well and in the best of health, Your servant, [See "Deities: What Color Eyes?" dipika.org, September 22, 2003] © dipika.org October 6, 2003 |
