Janmastami Mahotsav at ISKCON Baroda
by Basu Ghosh Das
Posted August 31, 2003

A brief report on the Janmastami festival at ISKCON Baroda

Crowds started gathering in a half-kilometer line for darshan of Sri Sri Radha Shyamsundar here at ISKCON Baroda at around 4:30 PM. The line was a continuous crowd of people until midnight.

We estimate that two to three hundred thousand people had darshan of the Deities. This comes to between 10 and 15 percent of the population of Baroda, and almost as many people came the next day for darshan. This was the first time in the four years since the inauguration of the new temple that so many people came on both days.

Padayatra America Report,

(from the Diary of a Padayatri)

Mike is always bringing somebody to meet us —friends, co-workers, family. Today he brought a woman he works with. It was she who gave the couple their first Bhagavad Gita (1972 edition) and after hearing about our presence at their place, she was eager to meet us. We saw that she is advanced in terms of devotion, familiar with Prabhupada's Bhagavad Gita for some 25 years. She was attentive and feeling encouraged to take up the path of surrender to Krsna.

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

We would like to organize a Harinam sankirtan party traveling from Europe to India. Therefore we would be very grateful if you would put the following invitation on the notice boards in Hare Krishna preaching centers or in media or if you would inform any friends who might be interested in participating. If you could send us addresses of e-mail accounts or websites where it would be possible to advertise this event, that would also be a great help.

Panca Tattva Update
Posted August 24, 2003

August 5, 2003–

This is Bhagavatamrta Das and Ganga Prabhu with the latest exciting developments in the castings of the Panca-Tattva. After a rain scare that postponed the casting of Srivas Thakur by one day, we are presently ready, able, and willing to cast the last of Panca-Tattva's glorious murtis into manifesting His form in this world.

The sthapati, unfazed by overcast and clouds over Swamimalai, is determined to carry out his solemn duty. We have covered the area of the fire pits for melting the metal and the area of the cocoon where the Deity is and where the hot metal will be poured into the clay mold. The stapathi has taken all precautions to make sure there will be no interruptions for the casting today in spite of rain or drizzle.

17th Annual ISKCON
Vrajmandal Parikrama

From Bhadra das
Posted August 23, 2003

"Let my eyes become overwhelmed watching the beautiful nectarean waves of the forest of Vrndavana, let my intelligence become merged in the nectarean ocean of the glories of Vrndavana, and let my body roll on the ground of Vrndavana due to being absorbed in the current of spiritual bliss. Oh, may I always offer obeisances at the feet of all living entities who reside in Vrndavana!"

Well, time has come again to experience that spiritual bliss in the month of Kartik by walking, chanting, dancing, and feasting through the twelve forest of Vraj, where Lord Krishna's pastimes are going on eternally.

This year, ISKCON's 17th annual Vrajmandal Parikrama will start on October 10th and will end on November 8th, 2003. Besides good prasadam prepared by devotees from Mayapur, good accommodations and other facilities will be arranged.

Close to 1000 devotees made the pilgrimage to Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir to celebrate the transcendental appearance day of Lord Sri Krishna. It was a fun-filled, exciting festival that began at 4:30 am with a special mangala-arati darshan and kirtan.

At 7:30 am, Sri Sri Radha Govinda were offered a brand new set of clothes, which was sponsored by congregation devotee Rajesh Gulab and his family. The outfit was fall-themed and featured clusters of red-sequin leaves with gold trim. After the darshan, the Deities of Sri Sri Radha Krishna were placed on Their swing, for a special daytime Jhulan Yatra.

We just celebrated Sri Balarama's Appearance Day here, in Mayapur. At 11:30 AM there was abhisheka and puspanjali, and then maha prasad was distributed to all the assembled devotees.

Abhisek was offered to few Ananta-Salagrams, residing on Lord Nrisimhadeva's altar. They came out for the abhisheka, and as you can see in the photos, They quite obviously have the shape of Ananta Deva (two from the back and one in the middle from the side).

The Philosophy of a Pirate
By Dhruva Maharaja Dasa
Posted August 18, 2003

I recently read the GBC's short piece on purchasing pirated products, and I believe they should have elaborated on the cultural ripple-effects of such activity.

The philosophy of a pirate usually runs something like this: "Why should devotees pay so much for CDs, tapes, MP3s, paintings, or books? These are spiritual items and should not be sold simply for profit. Similar to Deity worship, we shouldn't produce these things simply for profit. I'm going to sell these items even cheaper and actually help spread Krsna consciousness."

And the mentality of one who purchases pirated items usually runs like this: "I don't spend so much time making money. I've dedicated my life to serving Krsna and spend whatever time I have directly serving Him, not working like a mudha for money. Therefore, if I purchase these items at the cheaper price, what's the harm?"

Ecstasy on the Lower East Side
by Vyenkata Bhatta Dasa

Ecstasy on the Lower East Side

"To choose to attend to the Lower East Side," wrote Allen Ginsberg about Srila Prabhupada, "what kindness and humility and intelligence!" Anyone present at the Angel Orensanz Art Center on the Friday before Ratha Yatra can attest to the fact that Srila Prabhupada's vision is still alive and thriving on the Lower East Side almost forty years later.

The Angel Orensanz Art Center is in a neo-gothic former synagogue, a five-minute walk from 26 Second Avenue. The center was the venue where devotees from the Second Avenue community hosted the International Sankirtan Festival. The synagogue, designed in 1849, played an instrumental role in the birth of the Jewish reform movement in America.

Diary of a Traveling Preacher,
Volume 5 - Chapter 7

by Indradyumna Swami

"Help From Above"

Mathuranath das and I were the first to arrive on the Woodstock field, two weeks before the great three-day event. Although 52 bands and 500,000 people would soon come here, only a few rabbits now scurried across the large grass field that was once an airfield. The German air force launched its first bombardment of Poland from here at the beginning of World War II.

After the war, the region became part of Poland, and Jewish freedom fighters trained on this field to fight in Palestine (now Israel) in 1946. As I lay on the grass looking up at the sky, I thought how ironic it was that in a few days this field would host the biggest musical event in Europe with the theme "No Violence, No Drugs."

Jurek Owsiak, the organizer of the massive event, had once again invited us to participate with our Krsna's Village of Peace, as the village fit well into the theme of his festival. This year, at his insistence, we planned to increase both the size and activities of the village.

We prepared a feast in honor of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, and when Mrs. Lee returned, we distributed prasadam. Everyone was fully satisfied, and Judy even took some home for her family.

Temperature: 95 degrees. There is poison ivy everywhere, and Candrabhaga has got a pretty bad case of ivy poisoning.

In Moldova recently, the temple project was under serious threat from a lawsuit by an envious neighbor. The complaint was that the building cast a shadow upon his property. Can you believe it? Because of this envious neighbor, temple construction stopped and great trouble began with the government. A lawsuit was filed, and for some weeks all progress was stopped. Money was drained from the construction fund for legal help. Maya strikes!

As of today, August 2nd, the court case has been won, and the government has approved finishing the construction, but as you see from the letter above, "Our bank account is empty."

Willis has been working within the greater community (in Lancaster, Ohio, and in Maryland) to try to find another horse that will fit our needs as soon as possible. He agrees with our decision to replace Govardhan. He will get back to us as soon as possible. (The Amish don't keep telephones and only rarely use community phones).

We went out to town for supplies. People stopped us. "Oh, you are the travelers with the wagon," they would say. "Is the horse ok?"

Amogha Virya:
Amazingly Austere, Very Sweet

Amogha Virya Prabhu was in Detroit ISKCON for a number of years in the early 80s. He was on the sankirtan party at that time, and I must have spent close to a year traveling with him around America.

He had a very sweet disposition and was so eager to give people some chance to serve Krishna by taking a book, giving a donation, and tasting a little prasadam.

He had an incredible taste for hearing the Krishna Book. He would often read when he was taking prasadam, and he would carry the book around with him everywhere he went. He even read Krishna Book while walking around the parking lots on sankirtan.

I just wanted to share this with whoever is willing to listen. I have been a devotee for quite a while, and I have done different services in the past, but until last Saturday, I had never distributed a book in my life. I was too scared.

I have always been too concerned with what others would think. What if people recognize me? What if people ask questions that I can't answer? What if everyone shrugs me off? What if I'm no good? What if my efforts don't bear fruit? Then what will Srila Prabhupada think of me?

GALVA: Why Complicate Matters?
By Ananta Purusottama das
Posted August 2, 2003

Hare Krishna.

My personal opinion: Well, we all carry one type of conditioning or another, but is there really any need to go forming a separate association or group? It tends to make that group stand out more than ever and is a bit of an in-your-face sort of action. I know there are devotees who don't feel comfortable around homosexual or lesbian people, and those who are gay should accept that, as much as those of us who are not inclined that way try to accept those who are.

But should we so readily call such an association "Such and Such Vaisnava Association"?

Journal of a Prabhupada Man,
Entry #4

By Sankarshan Das Adhikari
Posted August 2, 2003

July 27, 2003—Austin, Texas USA

What jumped out of the cassette player and astounded me was Srila Prabhupada's statement "Take the management." He's speaking here of the entire material society, that it is being mismanaged by rogues and thieves and therefore plunged into a suffering condition. Srila Prabhupada is instructing us to take the management, to become the guiding authorities for the entire world population.

What a broad vision Srila Prabhupada has for this Krishna consciousness movement! What a broad vision we must also have as his followers! We are meant to manage the entire human society by the enlightened guidance so systemically, carefully, and lovingly presented in Srila Prabhupada's books.

Many of our devotees and members have lost their faith in ISKCON as being an institution that can lead the world out of chaos.

GBC: Don't Buy Pirated

Dear Devotees,

Please accept our most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The GBC Body and the GBC Executive Committee are aware that many pirated devotional products are available on CD, DVD etc.

The Body and its officers do not approve of the act of pirating and therefore strongly advise all devotees not to support the pirates by purchasing from them. Buying from pirates severely undermines the ability of the genuine producers to continue to supply the devotee community with new devotional products.
