Report, June 9 – 13 by Bhakta James Posted June 30, 2003 June 9, 2003 Changing the Wheels - Part Two This mission of changing the old, antique, original wheels over to modern-day rubber tires was a real challenge but one that the Lord must have wanted. We started on Monday 9 June. The day started with a nice morning
program. I had been craving the
association of devotees, and Krishna had
mercifully arranged to have some
dedicated Vaisnavas join me in the
middle of next-to-nowhere. My mother
again cooked some breakfast pancakes to
offer to the Deities. She also has many
roses and other flowers around the yard,
so I picked loads and began to make
garlands. I made one and so did my
mother— her first garland for Sri Sri
Nitai-Gaurasundara. It was ecstatic.
Mallik's
Sri Sri Radha-Govinda Temple We had to spend all of last week in Kolkata trying to get our computer fixed, so I went to the Sri Sri Radha-Govinda Temple to take darsan of Srila Prabhupada's early childhood pastime place and take photos. Coming down Mahatma Gandhi Road towards the crossing with Ravindra Sarani, I saw an old gate leading into the courtyard of an old building. It was Mallik's Sri Sri Radha-Govinda temple. I went in and had a beautiful darsan of Sri Sri Radha-Govinda, to whom Srila Prabhupada is connected so intimately. Some time ago, Brahmananda Prabhu
told us that They are actually the root
Deities of ISKCON, as Srila Prabhupada
told him that it is by Their mercy his
mission became successful and ISKCON
came into being.

Bhaktivinoda Thakura Ki Jaya! Restoration of Krishna Balaram Mandir By Deena Bandhu dasa Posted June 29, 2003 For the last two months it has been the hot season in Vrindavan, with temperatures at 110+ (F). The pilgrims visiting the temple are much fewer than usual. So taking advantage of this slow season, there has been a flurry of activity in Krishna Balaram Mandir. The temple is being restored back to its original state, as it was when Srila Prabhupada inaugurated the temple on Rama Navami 1975. Around Kartik last year, there was
some discussion about repainting the
temple. Daivishakti Mataji, who has been
here from the beginning of the temple,
told us that Surabhi had the temple
finished in marble dust that was meant
to be maintenance free and never
painted. Underneath all those layers of
paint is a beautiful, colored
marble-dust finish that one can see in
the old pictures of the temple.
Diary
of a Traveling Preacher June 11 - 20, 2003 "Vaikuntha Park" Having seen the power of the media to bless or curse, I closely followed our lawyers' dealings with the newspaper. We had demanded either an apology or the right to publish an article by the Festival of India presenting our side. The editors were sure we would back down under pressure (and no doubt they wielded more power), but unknown to them, we held the trump card. vidiksu diksurdhvam adhah samantad "Prahlada Maharaja loudly chanted the holy name of the Lord Nrsimhadeva. May Lord Nrsimhadeva, roaring for His devotee Prahlada Maharaja, protect us from all fear of dangers created by stalwart leaders in all directions through poison, weapons, water, fire, air and so on. May the Lord cover their influence by His own transcendental influence. May Nrsimhadeva protect us in all directions and in all corners, above, below, within and without." [Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.8.34] After five days, the newspaper gave
in and printed our rebuttal. I was
jubilant. We had won without a legal
battle, set a precedent for fair
coverage of the festival, and published
what the town secretary of Mlawa needed
to grant permission for the festival,
which she had canceled because of the
earlier report.
Ninth
Annual Llama Festival: Posted June 28, 2003 Spanish Fork event draws thousands to see the pride of the Andes When: Saturday, July 19, 4 pm The Llama Fest on July 19, now in its ninth year, was conceived as an opportunity to highlight llamas and their owners in the most public way possible: in the overall cultural context of food, music, spinning and weaving demonstrations, dance, and competitions between the llamas and their handlers. "If an average attendance of 4,000 to 5,000 is a public enough event," says festival coordinator Chris Warden, "then we've been successful. "This is an event that offers
more than many festivals. Other
festivals have booths, exhibits, and
some food. Above that, any festival that
has good, live entertainment will
definitely be successful. If over and
above that, you have llamas, which
everyone likes and which are relatively
safe for children, then you have really
got something that nobody else can
offer."
Bhagavad-Gita
Needed in Georgia Hare Krishna Prabhuji/Mataji, For some time now, I have been preaching on the Internet and I have made a friend who wants to have a Bhagavad Gita As It Is. I would like to find someone in the USA who can help me and send the book to this person. He lives in Columbus, Georgia. He is very nice and a rich person but does not know where to get the book. Could someone contact me so that I can give the details and we can send that book to this person and spread the glories of Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga. By Jayasri Devi Dasi Posted June 28, 2003 Having been around since 1969, I
can't help but notice the shift of
service devotees are now engaging in.
Many of the old timers are now living
outside, working 9-5's, and coming to
the feast on Sunday. As they say,
"back in the days" we were all
fully surrendered to the temple services
and lived very simply. Srila Prabhupada
told all of us that in this type of
situation, as Umapati Swami informed me,
to give half of our income for the
propagation of Krishna Consciousness.
By Madana-mohana dasa Posted June 28, 2003 The house is situated in the quiet
and nice Madhuvan Colony, near the
Krishna-Balaram Temple. It is far enough
from the main road so that the traffic
cannot be heard. The temple is just
about seven minutes walk away. When you
go along the parikrama path, you have to
turn left at the Krishna Balaram tree
and go a few more meters. Many nice
Western devotees are living in this
area, and also the Pepsi building is
just there.
Radhadesh
Program July 1 Dear Maharajas, Prabhus, and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. We would like to remind you all that from July 1 to 5 in Radhadesh, Belgium, there will be a wonderful meeting of Vaisnavas for sanga, kirtana, and discussions on topics about Krsna. Dr Liladhar Gupta will also be coming
and will be available for consultations.
Following is more info on Dr Gupta.
The
Lord Appears... The young children go to school—the
materialistic training ground that the
ancient demon Hiranyakasipu sponsored.
Gaining wealth and power, destroying
enemies, and searching for sensory
bodily pleasure are the criteria of
success in this place. But the demon’s
very son is Prahlad, who through the
instruction and good will of the saint

some preschoolers participating, as

More Prayers Needed By Jayo das Posted June 25, 2003 My humble prostrated dandavats at your feet. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. The procedure was aborted last time for medical reasons. I go in for (electro) cardioconversion tomorrow, 25th morning, to kick my heart back to a normal rhythm. It will be a while before I know if it is successful for the long term. Please say a little prayer for me, once again. Your fallen servant, [See "Please Pray for Me," dipika.org, May 30, 2003] By Varaha Dasa Posted June 23, 2003 Pranams. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Krishna Consciousness is spreading to every town and village in West Africa. We have just opened a new center in Lome, Togo. This is a Francophone country. The temple here is barely four months old, but there are people here who have been in contact with Krishna Consciousness for more than fifteen years. Quite a number of them have almost all the collection of Krishna conscious books. But most surprising is the level of
devotional practice of some of these
Togolese people, who have never seen an
ISKCON temple before but have been able
to establish their home altars and are
practicing their daily sadhana.

Journal
of a Prabhupada Man, Entry #1 Thursday, June 19, 2003, Austin, Texas What incredible mercy we've received from Srila Prabhupada! He wants us to make the whole world Krishna conscious. That's impossible, right? But Srila Prabhupada said that "impossible" is a word in a fool's dictionary. So we have to dedicate our entire lives to trying to accomplish the impossible. Talk about shooting for the rhino! Srila Prabhupada explains this in the purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 4.12.36: "A Krishna conscious being is
always engaged in planning how to take
all of suffering humanity back home,
back to Godhead. Even if one is not
successful in reclaiming all the fallen
souls back to Godhead, still, because he
is Krishna conscious, his path to
Vaikunthaloka is open. He personally
becomes qualified to enter the
Vaikunthalokas, and if anyone follows
such a devotee, he also enters into
Vaikunthaloka."
Research
on Srila Vyasadeva Hare Krsna. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Please accept my most humble obeisances. I am doing some research for a paper and would like to know if anyone can provide more info on the life of Srila Vyasadeva, the compiler of the Mahabharata and Srimad-Bhagavatam. Anything you may know or can lead me to will be of great help: 1. Is anything known about Srila
Vyasadeva's early childhood? young adult
life? marriage, etc? I know his son was
Sukadeva Goswami, reciter of the
Bhagavatam to Maharaja Pariksit, but
anything else?
Regulative
Principles: In recent months, I have observed a barrage of commentaries justifying and countering conservative and liberal views on the regulative principles set by Srila Prabhupada as the founding principles for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). I am hardly qualified to make further assertions on this subject. However, since the subject matter is one that impacts core ISKCON values, I can certainly reveal my impressions, impressions that I have conjured based on exposure and introspection. While sexuality is undoubtedly the
predominating force in architecting
material societal structures and the
primary focus of most of the discussions
I have alluded to in my introduction, I
feel the clarifications may be obtained
by analyzing the spirit behind
regulative principles in general.
Vyas
Puja Homage to Srila By Sankarshan Das Adhikari Posted June 21, 2003 June 17, 2003 My Dear Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Coming to ISKCON Houston (Hare Krishna Dham) yesterday, I felt as though I had entered Vrindavan after Lord Krishna had left for Mathura. I was feeling this way because I have so many wonderful memories of associating with you here. But now, from the external point of view, you are not here. I am finding your apparent absence to
be intolerable. Therefore I am forced to
go within my heart, where I can find you
as radiant, as resplendent, and as
powerful as ever, blessing me and
encouraging me in my service to Srila
Prabhupada.

Please share this information with anyone who could benefit from it. Padayatra Report, June 8 By Bhakta James Posted June 21, 2003 Sunday, June 8, 2003 My mother and I had just returned from a four-hour drive to Virginia, where I had visited with my father, stepmother, and aunt. As I was in the house, my mother began shouting my name from outside and came running up to the house all red-faced and out of breath. I went outside. "I invited them to stay," she said. "They are going to stay the night." I looked around but saw no one and was wondering what she was on about. "They are Krishnas," she
said, and she looked up the road past
the pasturing ground for the cows.
Snana
Yatra in Mayapur On June 15, we had a happy Snana Yatra celebration as Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra Devi took Their bath. It was not the usual type of abhisek, when a few brahmanas perform the bathing and everyone else watches. On this day, everyone was allowed to bathe the Lord, not only the temple devotees, but others as well— local village people, life members, guards, servants, and even outside visitors who had been lucky enough to come on that day. At around nine o'clock, after the
morning program, devotees started
walking to Rajapur Jagannatha Mandir
carrying Ganga water in clay pots.
Opening
of Swansea’s By Romapada Dasa Posted June 18, 2003 Five hundred people from different regions of Britain attended a colorful festival to inaugurate Swansea’s first Hare Krishna center, opened by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness on 15th June. The center features a large mantra meditation hall and prayer room, a traditional altar with Panca-Tattva Deities, a library, a gift shop and Swansea’s only 100 percent vegetarian restaurant, called Govinda's. Hundreds of elegant women clad in
colorful Indian saris and men in
traditional Indian dhotis danced and
sang at the arati ceremony when Deities
of Lord Chaitanya and His associates
were installed by His Holiness Sivarama
Swami Maharaja.
Kinds and Degrees of Illicit Sex By Urmila Devi Dasi Posted June 18, 2003 Please accept my obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Certainly we Gaudiya Vaisnavas, members of ISKCON, should know what is sinful and what is not. In the ultimate sense, sin is anything that is not done 1) for Krishna, 2) with a desire to please Him without wanting anything in return, and 3) without any interruption in service. Pure bhakti is the nature of the soul, and anything contrary to that, or less than that, is untruth and sinful. But sin is of different kinds and
degrees. Just as one cannot say that
because a cat is an animal and a dog is
an animal that a cat is a dog, so one
cannot say that because two things are
both sinful that they are the same kind
of thing, or to the same degree. Murder
is a different kind of sin than is
stealing, and there are degrees of both,
with different types and severity of
consequences. First-degree murder is of
a different degree than manslaughter,
and manslaughter is a different kind of
sin than armed robbery with a deadly
weapon, which is of a different degree
than burglary.

Honesty A Devotee Struggling By Madhusudan Hari das Posted June 15, 2003 Dear Anonymous Your letter is the story of many a devotee struggling in this world. Identifying a problem is surely half the solution, which you therefore have. Krishna would certainly appreciate your honesty and your sincere endeavor. Sixteen rounds can sometimes look and feel like a load weighing a ton or so. Please do not be so harsh on yourself
while still trying to improve. Whenever
I feel down in Krishna consciousness I
remember these anecdotes.

Panihati Festival at Kolkata Posted June 15, 2003 By the mercy of Nitai Gaurasundar and Srila Prabhupada, this year's Panihati Festival was very nice. Many devotees from Mayapur, Calcutta, and Madhyamgram came for the festival. H.H.Subhag Swami Maharaj, H.H.Tatpar Maharaj, H.H.Bhakivrajendranandana Maharaj, and H.H.Bhaktipurusottam Maharaj gave very nice lectures and association. There was nice kirtan by other devotees. There were two special singers, one of them from Doorshan. We distributed prasadam up to 4.30
pm. This year, the items were much more
than in previous years. The items were
as follows:
Diary of a Traveling Preacher Volume 5, Chapter 4 By Indradyumna Swami Posted June 15, 2003 June 6 - June 11 "Give No Quarter, Show No Mercy, Take No Prisoners" The festival in Lipno was one of the most memorable in the 13 years of our Polish tour. News of the mayor's rousing speech to open the event spread throughout town, and even more people came for what was supposed to be the second and final day. But the people wanted more. A group
of citizens went to the Mayor before the
festival ended and asked him to let it
continue a third day. It didn't take
much to convince him, and when we were
told that he agreed, we also agreed. In
order to reciprocate with the people, we
announced that we would hold a Vedic
wedding the next day. I ended the
evening by asking the people to bring
fruit and flowers for the bride and
groom.
Diary
of a Traveling Preacher June 1-5, 2003 "Aspiring to be a loyal disciple" When Nandini and Radha Sakhi Vrinda visited the Mayor of Nidzica, as he had requested, he congratulated them for our three days of successful festivities. Ninety-five percent of the town was in love with Hare Krsna, he told them. "What about the other five percent?" Radha Sakhi Vrinda asked. The mayor's face became serious.
"The priests in Nidzica were
vilifying the festival from the pulpit
and going to schools to deter the
children from going," he said.
"But I see our community as
tolerant and open, and I encouraged the
citizens. Because you gave me good
publicity by entertaining the
dignitaries at the castle, I am indebted
to you. The next time you visit, the
town will accommodate the entire
festival group in our best hotel."

It was a busy time and the standard wait for darshan (30 seconds) was 48 hours. I will write more with photos soon. Do's Worship your ishta or kula daivan before you start for Tirumala. on where they are, visit our web site The report follows: In the first week of Padayatra we had many wonderful experiences, and the most important thing is that Sri Sri Nitai Gaurasundar have been very merciful to us. We passed through many small towns in
Pennsylvania and found that the people
here were more welcoming and spiritually
inclined than in the cities. Several
people came up to us and asked us what
this was all about. We would explain our
mission, and they would patiently listen
to us.

Diary of a Traveling Preacher Volume 5, Chapter 2 By Indradyumna Swami Posted June 10, 2003 May 27-31, 2003 "Garlanding Heads of State" The success of the Brodnica festival was confirmed the next day, when a local newspaper published a front-page article about the event. Under the headline "Hindu Festivities in Brodnica," it ran a large color photo of a devotee painting gopi dots on the face of a girl. Regional television also ran a 10-minute report about the festival using our own footage. Our camera was a gift from Sunil Madhava das, president of the Chicago temple. When Sri Prahlad and I visited Chicago on our recent tour of America, Sunil Madhava Prabhu kindly bought us a professional digital camera for the Festival of India. The camera is of a higher standard than those of most Polish television crews, so local television stations gladly accept our footage, which is an asset to our advertising. But victories often come at the
expense of something dear. In the
afternoon, Nandini dasi approached me
with a dejected look on her face.

We have an opportunity to put subtitles of different languages on the same DVD’s. However, we don’t have the translations in any language other than English. If you want all of Srila Prabhupada’s videos including the lectures, morning walks, interviews, etc. in your native language, then we need your participation immediately. We can send you the English subtitles via email, and you send us the translations. Time is of the essence. We expect this project to be completed within 90 days. Sponsors
Needed Vedic Arts, a publishing house for children's books based on the teachings of Srila Prabhupada, has already produced many books, and there are many more to be published and distributed. We need sponsors who would like to contribute for a good cause: to educate children all over the world. As Srila Prabhupada said, "Books
are the basis" and "The child
is the father of the man: shape the
child from the very beginning." We
must have good books to lay a good
foundation for them. We need good men
and women as exemplary leaders and
administrators of the world in the
future. Then the Krishna Consciousness
movement will continue for 10 thousand
years, as Prabhupada desired. This is

Prabhupada Sometimes we hear that in order to have more impact on modern society devotees should adjust to its ways— for example, by wearing Western clothes. If we look at Srila Prabhupada's example, however, we see the opposite attitude. In Srila Prabhupada Lilamrita, there is an occasion when Srila Prabhupada met Swami Nikhilananda, who urged him to adopt Western clothes and habits. But Srila Prabhupada said he would teach Westerners Vedic ways instead: "Srila Prabhupada wore a coat Dr. Mishra had given him, but he never gave up wearing his dhoti, despite the cold, windy walks.... Such a situation should not exist in a truly spiritual organization, but in the pursuit of a spiritual life, reality often falls short of the ideal. She had the sad experience of losing two dear friends: Sundara Kali, the senior elephant, and Bhima, the famous bull. Both of them have gone back to Godhead, leaving her alone to carry on the service to Sri Sri Radha-Madhava. Posted June 3, 2003 May 28, 2003 After many months of planning, the day had arrived for Avadhuta Siromani Das and his wife, Candrabhaga Devi Dasi, to start on a journey they had anxiously been waiting for. The Padayatra horses and the wagon were ready, Sri Sri Nitai Gaurasundar had been installed in a grand ceremony, and the towns and villages the Padayatra will pass through had been charted out. Now was the time to take the blessings of all the Vaishnavas present, Srila Prabhupada, and Sri Sri Radha Damodara. I am writing to let devotees know of the wonderful service ISKCON Los Angeles is providing to the world. On their website, they have installed live video and audio feeds. Right now I am enjoying live ecstatic Krishna bhajans hundreds of miles away. Before work, I enjoyed an ecstatic guru puja to Srila Prabhupada.

as Devotional Paraphernalia Please accept my humble obeisances and respects. All glories to Srila Prabhupada’s lotus feet. Jaya Bir Krsna dasa Goswami. Jaya Sri Krsna Caitanya, Prabhu Nityananda, Sri Advaita, Gadahara, Sri Vasadi Gaurabhakta Vrnda. My dear Prabhu, please sit down. Do not read this letter standing up or you may pass out. Yes, by your mercy and Candramauli Swami’s prayers I met my guru Maharaja. It was so wonderful and full of transcendental enlightenment. We chanted japa, talked of the Supreme Lord and his glorious pastimes, and I even sang him my own special song, "The Yogi of my Mind." He told me he was very glad he came and he could see that I was Krsna conscious. During the visit he asked about my release. I humbly told Gurudeva that I had a 90-year sentence. I only had one chance for parole, and it wasn’t likely that I would make it. Diary of a Traveling Preacher Volume 5, Chapter 1 By Indradyumna Swami Posted June 1, 2003 May 15-26, 2003 "Back on the Tour" On May 15, I flew from Los Angeles to Ukraine for Nrsimhadeva Caturdasi. I felt uplifted to be going back to Eastern Europe and to my responsibilities on the festival tour in Poland, but the 36-hour journey, with connecting flights in Detroit, London, Warsaw, and Kiev, left me reeling. Indeed, I was not ready for the young man who approached me at Kiev Airport and began preaching to me in broken English about the Second Coming of Christ and the need for redemption. He ended by asking for a donation. By Danavir Goswami Posted June 1, 2003

Bhakti Tirtha Swami performed the ceremony. Also present were H.H. Candramauli Swami and many other senior Vaishnavas. The Deities were installed on the Padayatra wagon and then devotees did a parikrama around the temple and the farm with ecstatic kirtan.
